There are a number of reasons why people choose to pursue a vegan lifestyle*. While the most obvious and prominent of these consists of ethical considerations about the effect our habits of consumption have on the lives of animals, you might be surprised to learn that many people are cutting out meat for environmental and health-related reasons. You might be even more surprised to know that a lot of people lead an almost entirely vegan diet out of necessity or even tradition!
If you are not a vegan, we hope that you will consider the arguments we present for a vegan lifestyle fairly and with a view to challenging your own assumptions and discomforts. If you find yourself unable to argue with conviction against the case we make but still find yourself feeling irritable or resentful towards vegans, or somehow convinced they're just plain wrong in a way you can't quite put your finger on, we challenge you to reflect honestly and openly on whether these sentiments are yours or just prejudices or an aversion to change installed by your family, peers or society as a whole. If you are a vegan, we encourage you to read this section anyway as it might prove valuable if you ever choose to actively promote your lifestyle, or are ever cornered by a rabid anti-vegan seeking to belittle your views as naively sentimental or illogical when, in fact, the burden of proof does not rest on the shoulders of vegans but on those of defensive meat-eaters seeking to justify their unconsidered habits. Whatever paradigm you're coming from, whether you're an environmentalist, an animal-lover, a health 'nut' or a political left-winger, you'll find there are some very sound reasons, endorsed by smart, critical thinkers from across the board (and not just fluffy new-age bunny lovers), why everyone should adopt a vegan lifestyle.
* NB: You will notice that throughout this websitewe refer to a 'vegan lifestyle' as opposed to a 'vegan diet' . Simply put, we regard the matter of unnecessary animal exploitation as extending far beyond what we eat - what we wear, what forms of entertainment we engage in, even how we choose to undertake scientific research – a vegan lifestyle is a consistent response to issues of exploitation in all these areas. After all, what sense does it make to stop farming animals for food if you're still frivolously wearing them, laughing at their misfortune and injecting toxins into their eyes in the name of science?
